TMS Conference 2017
This was by far the largest conference any one of us ever attended, with about 67 symposiums and more than 4000 attendees. Since materials science is a quite diverse topic it was quite insightful to be able to attend symposiums other than our own. Many people from industry and key institutions were present and we attended some genuinely interesting and exciting talks. And there was plenty of opportunity to interact with them in person, a definite bonus in terms of networking. There was also an exhibition which we browsed and met with people from various companies and organisations such as NASA. A lot of subjects were discussed such as the main drivers behind research and I can say that I now have a much better understanding of the relationship between academia, industry, politics, and the economy. Presenting to a large audience, from industrialists to some of the most well-known experts in our field, was quite daunting but I can say with certainty that all of us are quite confident now with presenting and public speaking.
We also had plenty of opportunities to explore San Diego and its various attractions. The weather was perfect this time of year, and we visited museums such as the USS Midway, sampled the local food, and even had a chance to go to the well-known San Diego Zoo. This has definitely been a very insightful conference and an unforgettable trip.
