Science Communication at the BBC

Our final year students recently joined with the Theory and Simulation of Materials CDT from Imperial College and the Bristol Centre for Functional Nanomaterials to learn about the world of science journalism through the hands on experience of recording and editing a TV or radio news piece and a visit to the BBC radio studios to record their own science magazine show.

Communication is an important aspect of being a scientist and learning to do so effectively to non-experts can be daunting. We received expert tuition on how to write a summary of our research and learned how to compose a popular science article. Recording a television and radio show was an excellent experience which gave us an insight into the world of science journalism. Rhys Thomas - 2014 cohort
